In the morning, before breakfast or before work time, we greet each other with "zǎo(早) zǎo ān(早安) zǎo shàng hǎo(早上好)。 If it is later than 10 or work time in the morning, "shàng wǔ hǎo(上午好) " is more often used.
We divide time of a day into shàng wǔ(上午, morning)/xià wǔ(下午, afternoon)/wǎn shàng(晚上, evening),the sentence pattern for greeting is "time+hǎo(好)。Therefore, we say "shàng wǔ hǎo"(上午好) for "Good morning", " xià wǔ hǎo"(下午好)for "Good afternoon.", and " wǎn shàng hǎo(晚上好)" for "Good evening." Also, "zhōng wǔ hǎo"(中午好) means greeting at noon.
For the other time of a day, for example, early morning and noon time. The sentence pattern goes as "Time+ān(安)"。 Therefore you can say "zǎo ān"(早安,Good morning)、"wǔ ān"(午安,Greetings at noon), and "wǎn ān"(晚安,Good night) 。
Please pay attention to "wǎn ān"(晚安,Good night),we say it at late night, or before bed, or waving each other good-bye at night. If it's a greeting when you meet someone at nighttime, for example 7 o'clock, "wǎn shàng hǎo"(晚上好) is more appropriate.
